Should N.J. pastors obtain concealed carry permits? | Your comments

MOUNT LAUREL TWP. -- It's apparently pretty difficult to get a concealed carry gun permit in New Jersey. So difficult in fact that two South Jersey pastors recently went to a pro-gun group to give voice to their problem.

Pastor Kevin Bernat, with New Life Assembly in Egg Harbor Township, and Pastor Jeffrey Kovach, of Calvary Bible Church, in Mount Laurel, met with Alexander Roubain, president of the New Jersey Second Amendment Society, and explained the hoops they've been jumping through.

Here's what NJ.com readers had to say about it:

"They might as well forget about it. The carry permit applicant must show justifiable need and an urgent necessity for SELF PROTECTION. That standard has been in effect for a century and was recently upheld by the First, Second and Fourth Circuit courts. For more information on that decision see post-Heller Litigation Summary and Heller v. District of Columbia. The court observed that "firearms have always been regulated in the public sphere" and historical analysis does not lead "inevitably to the conclusion that the Second Amendment confers upon individuals a right to carry handguns in public."

"In view of the Charleston massacre this is not a far stretch that a house of worship is usually defenseless and it would make sense for them to be able to carry in and outside. Mind you that these Pastors do visits in some down right shady neighborhoods."

"What happened to 'Thou shalt not kill'?"

"Find me 1 person who got the firearm ID card in 30 days? I've been waiting 3 month for a permit to purchase a pistol and I already have my FID. Not only does NJ violate the second amendment they violate the same laws they write for this state."

"It is abhorrent to think that any human being has to ask another human being for permission to protect themselves or their loved ones. That is against all common sense, not to mention being against the guaranteed rights outlined in the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution. Then again, this IS the People's Republic of New Jersey."

"Because that is exactly what Jesus would do. I believe it was Jesus that said 'But I say to you, do not resist an evil person; but whoever slaps you on your right cheek, pull out your glock and put a cap in his. '"
